Resolution of the Participants in the U.S.-Russia Workshop on Recruitment and Training of Volunteers (St. Petersburg, Russia, April 8-10, 2008)

More than 30 Russian and American specialists took part in a Workshop on Recruitment and Training of Volunteers held at the Botanical Garden of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia) during the period April 8-10, 2008.

The workshop participants:

  1. Noted the great significance of the workshop for the conservation of biodiversity and promotion of sustainable development;
  2. Expressed appreciation to their American and Russian colleagues for organizing and taking part in the workshop;
  3. Noted the need to post information about the workshop on websites of Russia’s botanical gardens (www.binran.ru and others), as well as on the website of the botany project under the U.S.-Russia Agreement on Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources (www.usrubep.org);
  4. Agreed on the expediency of broadening collaboration on volunteer programs in the future, including:
    1. Preparation and publication of a methodological handbook on organizing volunteer activities;
    2. Spreading the word about volunteer programs among various segments of society;
    3. Exchanges of information about volunteer programs in botanical gardens, nature reserves, universities and other botanical institutions;
    4. Development of joint projects:
      1. to organize joint training seminars;
      2. to exchange specialists who coordinate volunteer programs;
      3. to make available opportunities for Russian and American specialists to visit each other’s countries for volunteer internships;
    5. Petitioning the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation to establish general and special programs to promote volunteering in botanical gardens, nature reserves, universities and other botanical institutions conducting scientific research.

This Resolution was adopted unanimously at the closing workshop session on April 10, 2008.
