Yuntolovskiy Regional Complex Natural Reserve

Yuntolovskiy zakaznik (sanctuary) is one of the few natural protected territories in the world, situated in the middle of residential area of many-millioned city. Lakhta Bay and nearby Lakhta bog have rather dramatic history of anthropogenic transformation. Different types of bogs and fens, swampy forests, water bodies with coastal and aquatic vegetation, where rare species of plants grow and numerous birds stop to rest and feed during spring and autumn migrations, are preserved here in spite of near 150-year drainage, peatery, hydrographic changes and other impacts. The territory of Lakhta lowland was proposed for protection as long ago, as at the beginning of XX century, but only in 1990 it has got the status of zakaznik (a kind of official natural protected area). Protected area occupies near 10 km.

Duderhof Heights – Complex Natural Reserve

Duderhof Heights is unique natural reserve, situated in 29 km to the southwest of the historical center of St. Petersburg. Duderhof upland consists of two hills with steep slopes cutted by deep hollows. One of the tops – Orekhovaya hill – is the highest point of St. Petersburg and the whole southwest part of Leningrad oblast. Beautiful vista on surrounding plains, lakes and the south part of St. Petersburg one can see from the top of the upland. Duderhof heights are characterized by unique geological structure and rich rendzinas on limestones. Predominance of broad-leaved forests non-peculiar for boreal zone, originality of flora and fauna, abundance of rare plants and animals let to regard Duderhof heights as an “island of south nature” amid the fields and settlements.
