03 September 2026 From August 24 to 30, an international scientific conference "Plant Diversity in Northern Asia: Modern Approaches to Study and Conservation" took place in Novosibirsk. The conference program covered a wide range of issues related to the study and preservation of plant diversity, both in the wild and in botanical gardens. Together with Irina Anatolyevna Pautova, the scientific secretary of the Botanical Garden department, we delivered a presentation "Representatives of the fam. Iridaceae in the collections of the Botanical Garden Peter the Great (BIN RAS) and the Conservation of Rare Species." The Iridaceae consist over 1,800 species, classified into 75–80 genera. Almost all members of this family are perennial herbs—often ephemeral plants—that grow from rhizomes, tubers, or bulbs. Currently, the collections of the Botanical Garden Peter the Great include 135 species from 32 genera of the Iridaceae, including 30 species from 13 genera held in the greenhouse collection. Of the 13 species of the genus Iris enumerate in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation, 11 are represented in the garden’s collections. This reflects a high level of success in implementing plant conservation strategies.
