04 July 2025 Yuri Sergeevich headed the Botanical Garden for 33 years, where he rose from a research intern to deputy director for science at the Botanical Institute, head of the Peter the Great Botanical Garden (1982–2015), and in 2001–2002 he served as acting director of the Institute. Along with research, Yuri Sergeevich carried out extensive public work. Dedicated to the cause of botanical gardens, a strategist and a worker, he made an era in their development. The portrait of Yuri Sergeevich Smirnov, worthy occupies a place in the portrait gallery of directors of the Botanical Garden of Peter the Great.
